Class Description
This class will be have a somewhat unusual structure. Formal lectures for this class will only take place in January. The other three months of the term will be left for individual and group assignments working with the Michigan Department of Information Technology (MDIT). All five assignments involved working with MDIT to receive training, analyze their project management process, or provide suggestions for improvement.
During February, March, and April, the students are expected to travel on their own to downtown Lansing to visit the MDIT offices to meet with assigned MDIT information officers and attend training sessions. This does not have to happen during scheduled class time; often the training sessions or meeting with MDIT officers will occur outside of the assigned class time. Students are still required to attend these sessions and meetings. This class does require a lot of work and time traveling into Lansing and attending meetings at MDIT. If you do not think you can fit this into your schedule, then come see me and we can discuss if this is the appropriate class for you.
During class time and during office hours, I will be available to meet with individual students or groups about any issues that come up. This includes any issues, including working with MDIT officers, intra-group issues, difficulties understanding class material, and clarifications or ideas for the assignments. Please feel free to use me as an additional resource.
Assignments
These assignments effectively don't have a due date. Officially, they all have due dates near the end of the semester. I strongly encourage you not to wait to complete these assignments. Get them done as early in the semester as you can. Certainly, scheduling the meetings and attending the training sessions must be done on MDIT's schedule. I encourage you to write up the paper as soon after attending the meetings/sessions as possible. You can turn in the assignment anytime during the semester, and I will grade them and provide feedback within a week or two. If you wait until April to begin the writing on these projects, you will probably feel overworked and stressed out.
Groups have been chosen.
- Individual Assignment 1: Attend Internal Training sessions
- Individual Assignment 2: Attend Project Initiation and Stage Exit Meetings
- Group Assignment 1: How are Projects Selected?
- Group Assignment 2: Pay it Forward: Provide advice to MDIT
- Group Assignment 3: Project Case Study Analysis
